Volunteering and Vacancies

Volunteering at the Cowper & Newton Museum

queens award for voluntary services

Enthusiastic and committed volunteers have been part of the life and success of the Museum since we opened in 1900. The opportunities to volunteer are wide and varied from welcoming our visitors, serving in the shop, helping conserve our artefacts and buildings, keeping our vegetable gardens looking attractive, and raising funds through all sorts of initiatives.

Volunteer with Us!

We would be so grateful for your support.  There’s a role for everyone here with flexible hours to suit your lifestyle.

Our volunteers receive full training and on-going support, invites to exclusive social events, and make a real contribution to one of Olney’s most significant tourist attractions.

Our Gardens are organically managed and re-enact, as far as possible, William Cowper’s cultivation of these grounds when he was resident in the late 18th Century. Cowper was a keen amateur gardener and wrote about his activity in his letters, which gives us an idea about what he grew. We take care to exclude any plant species that were not in England in Cowper’s time and to reproduce the ones he names.

We are looking for a Lead Garden Volunteer to manage the Summer House Garden. This person will manage a small team of volunteers and ensure heritage vegetables are sown, planted, and harvested at the correct time of year. They will also maintain the historic appearance of the garden for our visitors’s enjoyment and interest.

Tools, a greenhouse, and fertile soil await you in anticipation!
