Description

William Cowper and His Hares Print

The artist of this painting is  Joseph Walter West (1860 – 1933). In the parlour at Orchard Side, Olney in which “The Task”, the “Olney Hymns” and probably some portions of “John Gilpin” were written, the artist has been able to realise for us in this picture the poet surrounded by his three hares, “Puss”, “Tiny” and “Bess”, which his verse and letters have made immortal. The portrait is founded principally on the oil painting by Abbot, and the pastel by Romney – but no contemporary  likeness exists in the actual position chosen by the artist.

Old Tiney, surliest of his kind, Who nurs’d with tender care, And to domestic bounds confin’d, Was still a wild Jack-hare. Though duly from my hand he took His pittance ev’ry night, He did it with a jealous look, And, when he could, would bite. ” extract from Epitaph  on a Hare (1784)

Orchard Side is now the home of the Cowper and Newton Museum.

The print is mounted ready to be framed.
