Description

Olney Poor Levy and Disbursement Books 1744-1820

In 1900 these “Poor Law” books became part of the Cowper and Newton Museum archive. In 2015 the Museum received a very generous donation to conserve and digitise these records, enabling us to make them more accessible to researchers. There are three further books awaiting conservation for which the Museum is currently seeking funding. All donations would be welcome.

The digitised pages paint a detailed picture of life in Olney at the time, naming both the people who paid levies and those who received payment.

The information comes on a memory stick and contains:

  • searchable spreadsheet database
  • search results linked to digital images of relevant pages
  • instructions on how to install and use the database
  • PDF copy of the Introduction to the Poor Laws
