Description
Olney Poor Levy and Disbursement Books 1744-1820
In 1900 these “Poor Law” books became part of the Cowper and Newton Museum archive. In 2015 the Museum received a very generous donation to conserve and digitise these records, enabling us to make them more accessible to researchers. The digitised pages paint a detailed picture of life in Olney at the time, naming both the people who paid levies and those who received payments. The disbursements give weekly lists of those receiving help and include the names of many of the poorest residents, as well as many of the traders, together with their trades. The books will be of interest to family historians and anyone interested in the social history of the period.
The information comes on a memory stick and contains:
- searchable spreadsheet database
- search results linked to digital images of relevant pages
- instructions on how to install and use the database
- PDF copy of the Introduction to the Poor Laws
