‘Water Marks’
Sarah Hutt, Jill Tisbury and Emma Saul
Northampton & Rutland Open Studios
5th-28th November
Tuesdays to Saturdays 11am-4.30pm
Water Marks brings together three artists united by a shared love of the coast and the natural world, each interpreting that connection through their own distinctive medium.
Sarah Hutt is a painter, Emma Saul combines painting with ceramics, and Jill Tisbury works in glass. Together, they offer three very different perspectives on nature, landscape and the ever-changing character of water — expressed through paint, clay and glass.
All three artists were award winners in the Northampton & Rutland Open Studios: Jill receiving the Judith Bailey Memorial Award, Sarah receiving a Staff Choice Award and Lamport Hall Preservation Art Bursary, while Emma was named Artist of the Show.
With three accomplished artists, three very different approaches and a shared passion for the natural world, Water Marks promises an exhibition of quality, character and variety — with something to intrigue and delight everyone.
Jill Tisbury, Firedglass
Jill is an award-winning glass artist who has been drawing and painting since she could hold a crayon and, together with husband John, runs a Glass Arts business in Rushden, Northamptonshire.
“I love nature and am heavily influenced by the flora and fauna of Britain”. My wildlife art journey started in traditional pastels, having written and produced videos and articles for Paint & Draw magazine.
In more recent years I have exclusively worked in glass. My most recent works contain a wide variety of glass techniques. You will find enamel painted pieces alongside sculpted glass flowers, blown corals and sea-life as well as a brand-new jewellery collection inspired by the rugged Aberdeenshire Banff coastline.
In 2021 I won the prestigious Pollyanna Pickering award for a kiln-formed depiction of an endangered species (Hedgehog) at the Wildlife Art Society International and this year 92026) was awarded the Christopher Parsons award for Artistic Excellence.
Both John and Jill are qualified training and business development professionals and have swapped the corporate life for creative workshops run from their purpose-built garden studio.
Come and join us for a class.

Sarah Hutt
Every painting is an invitation, never an instruction.
Sarah does not paint to tell people what to see or feel. She creates spaces where memory, emotion and imagination meet, allowing each viewer to bring their own story. No two people see a painting in quite the same way, and that is where the magic lies.
Raised among the Lancashire reservoirs and moorland, Sarah grew up surrounded by a landscape shaped by wind, rain and time. Its rugged beauty taught her to notice change, imperfection and the quiet strength of endurance.
From childhood, Sarah saw the world through an imaginative lens, believing that brown cows contained chocolate milk. That instinct to look beyond what is visible still lies at the heart of her work.
Her creative journey began in textile design, followed by work in the British Virgin Islands and Switzerland as a designer and educator. Returning to the UK, she became a teacher and eventually headteacher of a special school for young people with autism. Working with minds that experienced the world differently deepened her fascination with perception and reinforced her belief that there is no single way of seeing.
Sarah is drawn to remote coastlines, erosion and the marks left by time. Land and sea continually reshape one another, just as lives are shaped by love, loss, joy and hope.
Her paintings are not records of place, but emotional landscapes where imagination, memory and a sense of place intertwine.
When a painting stops someone, draws them in and creates a connection, it feels like two souls meeting.
That is why she paints.
Emma Saul
Emma is an artist who explores landscape through experimental paintings and ceramics, drawing inspiration from nature and our collective connection to the land. Through her work she explores our emotional bonds to the earth, what feelings it inspires and what draws us to a landscape. Her work is mixed media and she likes to work spontaneously and experimentally with various mediums to create vibrant, movement filled work that connects us to a sense of place.
Emma trained in creative arts and printmaking at Bath Spa University, graduating in 2002 and now lives in Northamptonshire where she creates both her ceramics and paintings. She has exhibited nationally, and her work has found homes both in the UK and abroad.
