The art group meets weekly in the village hall at Great Houghton, the village is just outside Northampton. There are about 15 members, all from the local area, who attend on Thursday afternoons. We also occasionally work plein-air, at different locations during the summer months.
The group is run by Sarah Kelly, who has been teaching the group since it began in 2002. Sarah went to university in her thirties to study art and teaching. Her favourite subjects are landscapes, inspired by the beautiful colours that change with the seasons! Watercolour is the medium she uses most: but she uses all types of painting media including oils, watercolours, soft pastels, acrylics, pen and ink, teaching us the different skills required for each one.
There is quite a variety of skills across the members, but we all start each new project together, then work at our own pace. This is followed by additional weeks when we are practicing our own skills and working on our own pieces. With Sarah’s guidance, help and encouragement from each other, the group is, friendly, supportive and productive.
Our exhibition presents an assorted cross section of the paintings we have recently created, and the theme linking them together is our Inspiration for each piece.
Denise – is inspired by nature, from landscapes to flora and fauna, where she can concentrate on their shape, colour and intricate detail.
Liz – loves bold colours and contrasts. She is particularly inspired by macro-photography and the details of reflections in water droplets and she also enjoys experimenting, particularly with abstract imaginary landscapes.
Anne – found the Great Houghton art group and really enjoys the weekly group of like-minded people. She has tried different mediums, particularly oils and painting with a palette knife.
Sue – loves detail so she enjoys drawing with pen and ink. This has now progressed to pen and wash. The art group in Great Houghton has given her the opportunity to work with other media and try new ideas.
Karen – is drawn to close observation and the quiet dignity found in both natural reflection and everyday subjects. Taking inspiration from folklore and the natural world, striving to capture the detail — wrinkles, veins, leaves, grain — and a recurring fascination with how time, growth, and endurance leave their mark on a form, whether that’s a weathered face, a humble kitchen still life, or a mythical figure built from oak leaves.
Kay – says joining Great Houghton Art Group has been an inspiration, especially using oil paints for the first time. She loves drawing, painting portraits and nature-inspired landscapes.
We are thrilled and delighted to exhibit our paintings at The Three Hares Gallery in October 2026.
