Featuring artists and photographers Yvonne Russell & Angus Thompson together with a
Milton Keynes Caribbean Community exhibition of heritage and costume.
Yvonne Russell is an MK based artist and photographer whose photograph collection showcases a wide variety of subjects, but her true passion lies in capturing the vibrant essence of Jamaica’s culture and the simple, rustic lifestyle that permeates throughout the country.
She is a proud member of the Windrush Generation, born in Jamaica and brought to the UK by her parents when she was 10 years old. Her photography offers a glimpse into the soul of Jamaica—the enduring warmth, loyalty, and resilience of its people. These remarkable qualities have empowered countless Jamaicans to thrive, even in the face of challenging times during the early days of the Windrush era. Her photographs also capture the stunning natural landscapes and the charming rural scenes, which she believes truly represents the heart of Jamaica and its people.
‘I find great joy in capturing the breath-taking scenes of Mother Nature. By sharing these photographs, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation and respect for the environment that surrounds us. There’s so much incredible beauty right outside our doors waiting to be discovered!’
Angus Thompson is a London based photographer, with over 30 years of experience specialising in commercial, advertising and fashion photography.
More recently, with his company Phoenix Visions World Ltd., he has drawn on his location shoots for the fashion industry, photographs and brochures for hotels and Tourist boards, and magazine production for other clients within the tourism industry to publish a high-quality luxury pictorial coffee table book series – Visions of the Caribbean, to provide a visually delightful insight into the beauty, culture and essence of each island.
During the exhibition ‘Jamaica Heritage in Pictures’ and ‘Visions of Granada, Visions of Barbados and Visions of the Bahamas’ coffee table books from Angus will be on sale.
‘With our ever-changing world, too often aspects of our heritage are destroyed, with little visual evidence of its existence. I believe that history should not only reflect the written word but also the visual images of heritage and culture. With this in mind, we have embarked on a second book series and these publications will visually preserve in picture the heritage and historic aspects of the individual locations, for future generations to appreciate.’
