Bird Nesting Box

Cowper’s Summer House Nesting Box is beautifully handmade in pine wood by two of our museum volunteers. It is a replica of William Cowper’s 18th century Summer House which still stands in the garden of this home, ‘Orchard Side’, in the small town of Olney in Buckinghamshire, England.  Each box is unique.

Description

Bird Nesting Box

This beautifully designed nesting box in the style of Cowper’s Summer House, has an entrance hole of 32mm to suit great tits and other small birds.  The Perspex cover, which may be unscrewed, reduces the entrance hole to 25mm, more suitable for very tiny birds like blue tits.

Cowper’s Summer House was built by the previous owner of Orchard Side in the mid-18th century.  It became Cowper’s much-loved retreat, away from intrusion and where he could think about and write his poetry and letters, and where he and his friend, John Newton, used to chat together.  Cowper used it from 1768 when he came to live in Olney until 1786  when he moved to Weston Underwood.  When Cowper died in 1800, the Summer House became a meeting place for visiting poets and friends from far and wide. The Summer House is preserved as a Grade 2 Listed building. ‘Orchard Side’, an imposing red brick, Georgian building is now the Cowper & Newton Museum.  All are open to visitors, details for which can be found by visiting www.cowperandnewtonmuseum.org.uk

Quote from a happy customer:  “The bird box was only up on my wall for half an hour when a bluetit moved in!!!  We were thrilled!  I hope to get a photograph of it in residence to show you.”
