Smell greenery in the decorations and spices in the cooking. Imagine the lure of a Yule Log blazing in the fire, highly decorated with evergreen sprigs in the windowpanes. It was in 1800 that Queen Charlotte decorated her tree with gifts, dolls and candles. Adorning the stairs – bunches of holly on green sashes with garlands of holly and bay. Grapes, walnuts, glace fruits and pomegranates imported from southern Spain and North Africa and sugar cones from the West Indies – if you could afford it … Our Mr Cowper was not rich, but much-loved family and friends saw he never went without.
