‘SUMMER MOMENTS’
An exhibition of Ukrainian art, paintings and crafts
by Olney-based artists Oleh Stryzhevskyi and Agneta Shashkova
A new exhibition featuring oil paintings and crafts by Ukrainian refugees Agneta, Oleh and their daughter Bohuslava, a family of artists from Kyiv who have been living in Olney since May 2022.
The works were created in the summer and this will be their first exhibition in the UK. Some of the works were brought from Ukraine and are memories of the past life of the artists’ family and the glorious moments of summer in Ukraine. Others are inspired by the beautiful nature and summertime around Olney.
They are very grateful to the British people, the wonderful community of Olney, especially the family of Gill and Dave Hurley, for their friendly welcome and help.
At the Private View Agneta and Oleh’s daughter will play some Ukrainian folk tunes on a traditional Ukrainian musical instrument, the bandura.
In addition to their oil paintings there will be a display in the gallery and shop of crafts – small Christmas decorations ideal for your Christmas tree, or as household decorations throughout the year. Others are made as key rings. They are made of wood and painted in the style of Petrykivka painting by Agneta Shashkova. Agneta is a trained master of Petrykivka painting, which she learnt from a famous artist from the village where it originated, while studying at the Dnipro Art College.
In ancient times, the inhabitants of Petrykivka village used to paint their houses inside and out with this style of painting. Nowadays, it is used to paint household items, as well as an independent style of painting on canvas, paper and wood etc. On 5 December 2013, the Petrykivka style of painting was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
