4th-17th December
Ever since reaching 8 years of age and being allowed to use the family’s 127 Box Brownie camera at an air show I have been on that photographic journey. My first part time job at a chemist restocking bottle and baby foods soon led to running the new photographic counter and selling cameras.
As the end of my school life neared my careers teacher first made me aware that there were people called “Photographers” and a profession might be available? This led to a journey from my hometown of Northampton “Up North” to study Professional Photography full-time at Blackpool College of Art for the next 2 years.
My money earning bar work jobs turned into first taking hotel photographs and then working in a lab that printed them. Having learnt all the different facets of the photo industry my head turned me towards retail management as a future career.
However, failing to find employment here I turned back onto my photographic journey and after applying to over 60 photographic companies my destiny was sealed as I went back “Down South” and joined “Jessops of Leicester” the budding photographic company. This one store went on to dominate the photographic world and growing to over 270 stores and at one time was listed in the “Guinness Book of Records” as the “Largest Photo Centre in the World”.
I then spent the next 27 years using all my photographic talents – teaching, selling, managing and enjoying my photographic journey. During all these years my passion for taking photographs carried on during any free time I could find from raising 3 children with my wife Hazel.
Today, a lot of my time revolves around helping my wife look after my 29-year-old autistic son whose passion is to have his photograph taken on the footplate of as many trains as he can get on. This has also included many footplate rides on both steam and diesel locomotives on many preserved railways. Due to the nature of autism, occasionally I get a brief window of opportunity to take TRAIN images whilst looking after him.
I now have thousands of images, many now on my web site at: www.gordonjames.uk
These also Include all those that I took after I travelled 10,000 miles all around North America (in 3 weeks) after a 2-month position teaching photography at an America Summer Camp called “Bucks Rock”, back in 1984.
I hope you enjoy visiting and seeing my PLANE and TRAIN images at my first gallery exhibition; here at “Three Hares Gallery” at the top of the Cowper Newton Museum. All images can be purchased at the gallery, or a wider range of images can be found at my web site and are fully supported by FineArt.America who manage and supply a wide range of products with my images on them. Please enjoy them as much as I have making, taking and producing them by hand for the gallery exhibition.
