Earth, Water & Wing

5th-26th June 2025
In ‘Earth, Water, and Wing,’ Sally Pennycate, Melissa McDonald and Marika Du Plessis come together to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Their distinct yet complementary works explore the intricate relationships between land, sea, and sky. Sally’s abstracted landscapes evoke hidden pockets and reflections of nature in a layered, textural style. Meanwhile, Melissa’s seascapes capture the drama of the coastline in an expressive, emotive way while Marika’s characterful, quirky ceramic birds celebrate the joy and abundance of life. Together, their art invites viewers to contemplate the harmony and wonder of the natural world.
Sally Pennycate is a landscape artist working in and around Northamptonshire, transforming the beauty of nature into meditative artworks. Her inspiration comes from unseen or overlooked elements such as the forest edge or the reflections of nature. Textural and expressive Sally uses a number of techniques and paint media to layer and then work back through always searching for ways to capture the essence of the landscape.

Melissa McDonald Currently based in Northamptonshire, Melissa is an expressive artist and works primarily in acrylics. She is deeply inspired by the beauty of the coast, sea and sky. After years of travelling and working as a private chef in Scotland and Cornwall, she decided to trade her culinary skills for a paintbrush.
“Painting for me is more than just trying to recreate a scene, it’s about capturing the feeling of being there. I find standing in the middle of these wild landscapes calming, Even when the wind is howling, and the waves are crashing, I feel there’s a strange sense of peace.”
To find her inspiration, Melissa often visits the highlands and islands of Scotland and the coast of Cornwall during the quieter autumn and winter months. “It’s like the land, sea, and sky are all speaking their own language.”
Melissa regularly shows her work in exhibitions, events and has her work in private collections throughout the UK.

Marika Du Plessis From her sunlit Northampton studio, Marika du Plessis creates soulful ceramics—especially her beloved Quirky Birds. With tiny beaded necklaces and wings kissed with shimmering glaze, each piece is a one-of-a-kind spirit of hope, joy, and resilience. Her whimsical creatures aren’t just art—they’re gentle reminders that when life feels heavy, your wings are still there, ready to lift you.
Her ceramics aren’t just meant to be admired; they are meant to be felt, cherished, and carried close—small charm of hope, stitched with love, and ready to soar.
