‘Natural Alchemy’
1st-30th May
Tuesdays – Saturdays 11am-4pm
Tapestry weaver Karen Hiser, silversmith Vilma Hing, and textile artist Yvonne Elliott from the Artist Collective at Westbury Arts, present a collection of work inspired by the natural world. From intricately hand woven hangings depicting marine life, to delicately wrought leaf-shaped jewellery, and naturally dyed and botanically printed embroideries and accessories, the exhibition explores the multiplicity of colours, shapes and forms which exist in nature.
Yvonne Elliot
Yvonne is a textile artist from Milton Keynes – city of trees, grid roads and roundabouts – where she has a studio at Westbury Arts Centre. Westbury is a little oasis of calm, with ancient apple trees, bee hives and a moat where moorhens nest. Her work often reflects her surroundings, alternating between images, motifs and techniques which draw on the natural world, and the stricter geometries of the local built environment. Other sources of inspiration evolve from dreams, mythologies, art history and poetry.
Yvonne likes to work in layers, building up texture by adding paint, print, machine and hand embroidery to a fabric base. She exhibits larger framed pieces and wall hangings at Westbury Arts Centre and other local galleries, but also likes making smaller items like clutch bags, brooches and decorations. She rarely repeats a design exactly, but may work through the same process, varying the colours and the stitches used. Most of her hand stitching happens in the evening as she finds it relaxing and meditative.
Yvonne loves using natural fabrics and threads – silks, wools and linens – and has a huge stash of recycled, salvaged and found ‘treasures’, which she uses to embellish bags and brooches. Yvonne is also developing a series of naturally dyed botanical prints which extend her range of wearable art.
Karen Hiser
Tapestry weaving is an ancient form of textile art. Each piece is woven by hand, using colour-mixed bundles of yarn – usually wool – and building from the bottom up, gradually covering a vertical framework of cotton threads (warp). A tapestry can take many months to complete, and the slow, methodical creation of a piece is a sensory and mindful experience.
My tapestries emanate from a fascination with the beauty and intrinsic value of the natural world: the richness of colour, the perfection of balance and form, and the incredible and constant presence of patterns in the imagery. I have a background in biodiversity and conservation, which additionally gives me a sense of fragility when I am selecting subjects from the natural world. I take joy in celebrating an environment, habitat or living organism whilst, at the same time, being conscious of the precariousness of an existence that is too precious to lose.

Jewellery-making is where I find joy: shaping raw materials by hand to create something beautiful and meaningful. I work mainly with silver, combining traditional techniques with modern approaches to bring each piece to life. By adding details and blending different metals, semi-precious stones, and enamel, I introduce colour and contrast. For me, craftsmanship is deeply personal—each piece tells a story, reflecting passion, artistry, and individuality.
