  • Heritage Open Day at the Cowper & Newton Museum:  HISTORIC HOUSE, GARDENS and GALLERY are open. (Please see our website for details of gallery artist exhibitions). Visit our new exhibition ‘Quackery and Enlightenment: A Journey through Georgian Medicine’. Georgian Medicine Children’s trail £1 with prize.

 

  • Relive Georgian life at the home of William Cowper, renowned 18th century poet. Discover how his friend John Newton’s life and personal experiences inspired him to write the world’s most famous hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ in Olney.  Wander through the 18th century Flower & the Summer House Gardens. Don’t miss poet William Cowper’s ‘Verse Manufactory’ surrounded by medicinal plants and heritage fruit and vegetables.

 

  • Professor Nicola J Watson (The Open University) will be offering a fifteen minute talk on aspects of Georgian food culture, exploring how and why William Cowper characterises the raising and eating of hothouse cucumbers in his poem The Task (1782) as symptomatic of social ills. (1pm and 2pm)

 

  • New exhibition: ‘Quackery and Enlightenment: A Journey through Georgian Medicine’. Come and discover new stories throughout the Museum associated with medical care in Cowper and Newton’s time, including the ledgers kept by Mrs Unwin’s physician Dr Grindon of Olney.

Entrance is via the Museum Shop just off Market Place.  NO PRE-BOOKING REQUIRED.  Just walk in from 11am.  Last admission will be 3:30pm. The Historic House, Gardens, Gallery and Shop will close at 4:00pm

Our Museum building remains CLOSED.  We are opening our gardens on limited entry.  The Cowper & Newton Museum gardens will be open to welcome you on Wednesday 5th August 10.30 – 12.15 and Saturday 8th August 10.30 – 12.15
