Georgian Christmas Crafts – Half Term Holiday Family Fun – Getting ready for a ‘Georgian Christmas’
Cowper & Newton Museum’s Georgian Christmas – from 3rd to 13th December 2019
Georgian Christmas crafts. We need your help to create our own sumptuous ‘Georgian Christmas’ for visitors in December. It’s going to be gorgeous!
Imagine 18th century Christmas….
William Cowper’s house in Market Place, Olney (now the museum), would have smelt of the greenery in the decorations and the spices in the cooking. Entertaining rooms would have been warm from the Yule Log blazing in the fire and highly decorated throughout, including evergreen sprigs in the windowpanes. Bunches of holly on green sashes, and garlands of holly and bay would have adorned the stairs. Rich households would have had grapes, walnuts, glace fruits and pomegranates imported from southern Spain and North Africa and sugar cones from the West Indies. Queen Charlotte in 1800 decorated her tree with gifts, dolls and candles.
